Do Hard Things

Feb 4, 2024 | ben

You should do hard things. What are hard things, you ask?

Well, you probably realize there are things that you are terrible at doing: things you don't understand well, intellectual sounding topics that make you shift uncomfortably in your chair when you're out to drinks with friends because you don't know the slightest thing about those big words.

Why?

Because your friends are all smarter than you. Come to think of it, how do you even get invited to drinks with these people?

More likely, however, you just aren't trying hard enough to do more hard things - like learning complicated conversational shit. Yes, my friend, these are the not so elusive hard things in life. They are the mental and the physical and the emotional perturbances that confront you constantly, yet you ignore.

So how do you know you're about to embark on doing something hard?

Are you feeling slightly annoyed, yet don't fully know why? Perfect, you're on the path.

Feeling like an imposter trying to solve a problem? Fantastic, you're practically an old hand!

Physically burdened? Sore? Ego crushed? Yes! You are doing hard things!

The objective is to minify the ego. The process of metaphorically destroying and rebuilding yourself is part of the 'doing hard things' curriculum. So go on, try something new.

Hopefully you moderately dislike it, your cerebrum hurts, feel like you don't yet belong and you just want out.

Well done, you've made it...for now. Keep going.
